	The company’s newly formed division at Dahej in Gujarat manufactures Potassium Hydroxide lye/flakes and Potassium Carbonate. Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) being a raw material for manufacturing Potassium Permanganate, this backward integration gives UCIL a competitive advantage.

	At Universal, Potassium Hydroxide (Caustic Potash) is produced by the electrolysis of Potassium Chloride with modern membrane cell technology.

	The major applications of Potassium Hydroxide is in producing potassium compounds (carbonate, permanganate, cyanide), electrolyte in alkaline storage batteries, dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals, liquid fertilizers, food additive, herbicides, electroplating, mercerising, paint removers and in refineries among others.

	Potassium Carbonate (K2CO3) which is also manufactured at Dahej has applications in glass industry, potassium silicate, pharmaceuticals, food, detergents and cleaners, photographic chemicals, agricultural, gas purification, rubber additives, polymer catalysts, potassium bicarbonate, cement and textiles. Hydrogen and Chlorine are also produced during the process.
